Is your dog or cat over 7 years old? Take him or her for a check-up

Compared to young animals, older dogs and cats have a higher risk of disease. Their bodies are altered and become more vulnerable. For this reason, from the age of 7 years (equivalent to 62 years for a person), annual check-ups are recommended to enable us to diagnose the disease in time to treat it.

Numerous studies have shown that approximately 20% of cats and 25% of dogs, middle-aged or older, that appear healthy on routine examination turn out to have hidden abnormalities.

By examining animals by ultrasound, we can discover if they have hidden abnormalities and treat them in time to improve their quality of life.

Most common diseases in dogs and cats over 7 years of age

The most common diseases in older dogs are:

  • Cardiovascular diseases
  • Bone diseases (osteoarthritis)
  • Tumours: breast, spleen, liver
  • Cataracts
  • Hormonal diseases: diabetes, Cushing’s, hypothyroidism
  • Chronic renal insufficiency
  • Obesity
  • Liver diseases: hepatopathies
  • Cognitive dysfunction syndrome
  • Dental disease
  • Prostatitis, prostatic hyperplasia

The most common diseases in older cats are:

  • Chronic renal failure

If your pet is over 7 years of age and you have observed behaviours such as fatigue, decreased activity, weakness, changes in habits, changes in appetite, bad breath, coughing, vomiting, or even if you do not notice any symptoms at all, you can visit your vet for a check-up.
